Summer Research Director Internship

The Invest in Women Entrepreneurs (I-WE) Initiative seeks to significantly increase resources that support the start-up and growth of women owned businesses in the US. The I-WE Initiative is seeking an intern for a part-time 10 week Research Director position (50 hours total) researching and reporting on women entrepreneurship in the United States. As Research Director, you will be evaluating information from government agencies and previous studies to find recent trends in women’s business ownership, such as the relationship between homeownership/business ownership, availability of support services (such as women’s business centers), and capital access. Your research will culminate in reports that will enable the I-WE Initiative to educate the public and government agencies on the fuller picture of women’s business ownership.

Requirements:

  • Set a mutually agreed-upon schedule for the 50 hours of work (projected to be 10 weeks but can be condensed as needed)
  • Fluency in online research with primary sources, particularly ability to obtain and analyze data from government agencies such as Fannie Mae
  • Comfort with seeking out in-person contacts and/or calling government agencies for information
  • Ability to discern trends and follow leads
  • Ability to write a coherent, professional report of your findings
  • Ability to keep a detailed timesheet of tasks completed

Breakdown of tasks:

  • 10 hours: researching relationship between homeownership/self-employment for women (e.g. key questions: How many women use home equity to fund businesses? What percentage of women entrepreneurs are homeowners and use home equity?)
  • 15 hours: contacting government agencies about resources for women owned businesses
  • 10 hours: following up on leads uncovered through homeownership research and government agency research, gathering further data
  • 5 hours: analyzing data received from government agencies, finding trends, compiling into short written summaries
  • 10 hours: write up findings - resources for women business owners in the U.S.; correlations between women business ownership and use of home equity for business financing

Compensation for Research Director:

  • $1000 for approximately 50 hours of work
  • your name will appear on final reports that I-WE Initiative uses in advocacy work
  • you will gain valuable hands-on experience with influential research wor
